The lock icon and such are good indicators but never ever use this as proof, these things are very easily spoofed and are no longer a very good indicator. You need to research the site a little bit and make sure they are a reliable vendor. There are various signs of a fake though.

It is always a good practice to open your browser and clear cache before logging onto bank sites. When the job is over log out and clear cache, temp files and then quit browser. This I feel is a good step.

With security symbols being so easily faked, it can be really hard to tell the difference between a secure and an unsecure site these days. I usually just stick with the sites I'm familiar with. Before I send money to a new site, I do a lot of research and make sure they're who they say they are and that their site is secure.

I am starting a new on line business venture and am trying to figure out how to make purchases through the site truly secure. If I look at a secured site's and click the ssl or verisign badge will it take me to the site that is providing the badge?
If so then can consumers also look at the badge's site to read bout the security provided?
